Silent Reflux: Symptoms, Home Remedies, Treatment

This helps the food in your stomach remain there instead of traveling into your esophagus while you’re sleeping. I’m Dr. David Johnson. Hopefully this is helpful for you, and when you see your next case of laryngopharyngeal reflux, you can make some meaningful differences in these patients going forward. Thanks for listening. So, my plea to you is to take a good voice history, listen to the patient, look for habituation, develop a relationship with a speech-therapy rehabilitation clinician or a laryngologist who has a vested interest in voice.

Damage to the larynx is sometimes visible through a scope. Chronic heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD. Acid regurgitation (refluxed material into the mouth) is another common symptom. But numerous less common symptoms other than heartburn may be associated with GERD. The Infant Acid Reflux Solutions team has had the pleasure of working with the Mom’s and the Dad’s caring for infants with infant acid reflux for many years.

Motility testing can identify some of these abnormalities and lead to a diagnosis of an esophageal motility disorder. The second use is evaluation prior to surgical or endoscopic treatment for GERD.

Secondly I would also recommend my article on LPR symptoms where I talk about the symptoms of silent reflux in detail which could be potentially effecting you. While anyone with acid reflux can be affected it is more prominent in people who suffer from LPR.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole and lansoprazole effectively switch off stomach acid production and have become by far the most commonly used drugs for this condition. They are safe in long-term usage, but a downside is that people often don’t bother doing the other “non-drug” things that will reduce their symptoms. For many people, reflux occurs most often at night and sets up the irritation that continues to bother during the daytime. One of the most important things you can do is to elevate the head of your bed.

In this way, refluxed liquid can cause coughing without ever reaching the throat! In a similar manner, reflux into the lower esophagus can stimulate esophageal nerves that connect to and can stimulate nerves going to the lungs. These nerves to the lungs then can cause the smaller breathing tubes to narrow, resulting in an attack of asthma.

Despite the development of potent medications for the treatment of GERD, antacids remain a mainstay of treatment. Antacids neutralize the acid in the stomach so that there is no acid to reflux. The problem with antacids is that their action is brief.

Increased thick secretions can occur from low humidity in the winter, a decrease in fluid intake (dehydration), bacterial sinus infections, or from some medications (antihistamines). Swallowing problems or acid reflux can give patients similar symptoms of nasal/throat drainage or phlegm. A cough associated with other symptoms of acid reflux or LPR should also be seen by a doctor. Treatment for a chronic cough caused by acid reflux aims to reduce the reflux that is causing or worsening the coughing. This is often done through medication.

Learn which foods are beneficial here. Acid reflux is an uncomfortable condition in which stomach acid flows back into the food pipe. This article investigates which drinks will make it worse, and what you should drink to minimize symptoms.

The probe measures the acid level in the throat over a 24-hour period and can confirm the presence of abnormal acid levels. Treatment for LPR may include limiting acidic foods, caffeine, alcohol and carbonated beverages.

Other medications work to decrease stomach acid secretion before it happens and are more effective at controlling symptoms. Medications should be discussed with your physician. Pregnancy will markedly increase symptoms of heartburn and sometimes throat symptoms as well.

Before the introduction of endoscopy, an X-ray of the esophagus (called an esophagram) was the only means of diagnosing GERD. Patients swallowed barium (contrast material), and X-rays of the barium-filled esophagus were then taken. The problem with the esophagram was that it was an insensitive test for diagnosing GERD.

Allergic reaction symptoms vary from person to person, and they sometimes affect the respiratory system, causing you to cough. Other respiratory symptoms of a food allergy include wheezing and shortness of breath. Learn which formulas will help ease your baby’s acid reflux, including hydrolyzed protein formulas, soy milk formulas, and specialized formulas. Most babies and young children outgrow reflux without any lasting damage to their esophagus or throat.

Symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and regurgitation may be due either to abnormal gastric emptying or GERD. An evaluation of gastric emptying, therefore, may be useful in identifying patients whose symptoms are due to abnormal emptying of the stomach rather than to GERD. The amount of time that the esophagus contains acid is determined by a test called a 24-hour esophageal pH test.
