Some other potential causes of aphthous stomatitis also include deficiencies of various vitamins and minerals (though these are uncommon). Aphthous ulcers are shallow ulcers in the mucosa (lining) of the mouth. They may appear anywhere in the mouth but are frequently found on the inside of the lower lip or cheeks, or on the sides or base of the tongue. They may last from 1 to 2 weeks to months. The ulcers may appear whitish or yellow with a red base, with a grayish layer that develops when they begin to heal.
Blisters are sores that are raised and filled with clear fluid (they are called vesicles or bullae, depending on size). Rarely, the mouth looks normal even though people have symptoms of mouth inflammation (burning mouth syndrome). Most mouth ulcers heal within a week or two without treatment. In the meantime, you may be able to manage the pain by taking over-the-counter painkillers, or treatments (speak to your pharmacist).
Stress, minor injury to the inside of the mouth, acidic fruits and vegetables, and hot spicy foods can trigger the development of canker sores. Try to avoid talking while you’re chewing your food to reduce accidental bites. Reducing stress and maintaining good oral hygiene by using dental floss daily and brushing after meals also may help. Finally, get adequate sleep and rest. This not only will prevent mouth ulcers, but a host of other illnesses as well.
