Effect of Bed Head Elevation and Nocturnal GERD

First and foremost, remember that keeping your body supported during sleep is more important than anything else. If you fail to keep your neck, spine, and shoulders supported while you sleep, you are going to hurt your posture, and end up with aches and pains. That’s even worse than acid reflux. GERD or acid reflux is also known to be a risk factor for sleep apnea, a respiratory disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts through the night when the person is asleep.

Sleeping on a regular pillow combined with the bed head elevation with these risers would elevate the upper body 6 to 8 inches – effective to prevent reflux of gastric contents. Tight fitting PJs with a snug waist band are an enemy to those with acid reflux and GERD.

Although this pillow elevates the torso up to 7 inches, the gradual slope does not make the incline too steep. Here we look at the top 5 wedge pillows capable of providing elevation and support.

Part One of Four:Raising Your Bed Effectively

But remember that there is a difference between ordinary wedge pillows and those that have been specifically designed for acid reflux relief. There are various cheap alternatives to wedge pillows available, but they are not capable of providing the support that therapeutic pillows do.

The elongated slope is longer than many other wedge pillows to provide a more gradual rise. At a full 28 inches wide, it is also half as wide as a queen bed, allowing you to move about and spread out if needed. Made from a soy, poly foam, it acts as a conforming memory foam but has a firm underlying comfort and has no offgassing. The Xtreme Comforts Memory Foam Bed Wedge Pillow was created from 2 solid wedge layers to provide a soft, conforming surface to better accommodate side sleepers as well as back sleepers.

Experts have determined that the stomach acids backed up result in the spasm of the voice box, which in turn blocks air from the lungs. Healthy digestion occurs with the (LES) opening to let food through to the stomach and then closing after. By normal closure food and stomach acid cannot flow back up. Reflux happens because the LES is too weak or relaxed to close properly, thus allowing for the stomach acid to backup back to the esophagus.

These muscles are normally taut, keeping the opening from your stomach to your esophagus closed. When you eat or drink something, the muscles relax so the food or liquid can travel down into your stomach.

I suffer from acid reflux and looking for a mattress bed wedge (not just those pillow versions, but the full bed version) like shown here. Having symptoms of acid reflux at night is common. When you lie down, it is easier for the acid to move into your esophagus. But just because you have a hiatal hernia and acid reflux does not necessarily mean that they are the source of your symptoms. With that in mind, it would be a good idea for you to talk with your doctor about your nighttime pain, especially if you are having any other symptoms, such as shortness of breath or jaw or arm pain.

Don’t Reduce Stomach Acid

The dual component system has a patented design to create an elevated and side sleeping position for relief from acid reflux. The system can also be used for snoring and sleep apnea. Because you aren’t going to slide down this pillow, you remain in the right position all night long and get maximum relief. Wedge pillows are primarily manufactured for acid reflux relief. They are rising in popularity, and various manufacturers have started to bring out their own versions of the wedge pillow.

The mattress pairs premium 5-pound memory foam with an organic cotton cover, and the mattress is hand-crafted right here in the United States. As the old saying goes, “What goes around, comes around.” It’s interesting to hear that we are returning to some of the “old” techniques I learned about in medical school, over four decades ago, for helping to deal with gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD). Although GERD may be associated with a number of symptoms, some quite serious, the most common one that patients complain of is “heartburn”, a sense of acid burning that can go from the stomach to the mouth.

This 15 inch tall mattress offers a blend of pushback and support so that you can sleep on your back, side, or stomach. The ability to sleep comfortably on your side is ideal when you’re having an acid reflux flareup. Those experiencing heartburn may especially appreciate the cooling properties of this mattress.

Most often this will occur following a meal. Donna is onto the right idea, because gravity can be one of the most effective ways to combat nighttime acid reflux.
