Alternatively, you can use wedge pillows — available at medical supply stores and elsewhere — to raise your upper body. This option may be more comfortable, especially if you are sharing your bed with your significant other. An adjustable bed is another option.

I am now 21 months post op. I found sleep hard for the first ten weeks, since I like to sleep in my side and due to the surgery coukdn’t do it at first. Quite suddenly around ten weeks I could tolerate sleeping on my side again. I dud then and still do now use a spare pillow to rest my tummy/scar against occasionally, as in the early days it felt like my tummy was sagging over. I may be different to many in that I didn’t have any acid reflux either before or after surgery.

I tried just elevating the relative head of my bed and hated the full body angle. I think putting risers under the legs at the head of the bed might just tilt the bed up enough that you get a full body tilt. Using both fludrocortizone and head-up sleeping increased orthostatically challenged patients ability to stand without symptoms from 3-10 minutes as well as their blood pressure. One week of heads-up sleeping (18″) in young healthy adults or near adults resulted in reduced dizziness, reduced drops in blood pressure during standing, reduced ‘peripheral resistance’ (blood vessel contractions) and nightime peeing.
There are a number of reasons you should quit smoking, apart from reducing acid reflux. If you do, you’ll also reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, other cancers, and you’ll see an improvement in your hair, skin, nails, and teeth.
Acid reflux. Raise the relative head of the bed by 4 to 6 inches, so you can sleep with your chest and head elevated. You can lift the top end of the bed by sticking blocks underneath — although your spouse may object once he or she has slid out of the bed a few times.
This benefit was noted in patients who were not taking medications, and in others relieved symptoms better than taking medication alone. As there are no medicinal side effects associated with elevating the relative head of the bed, adding it to an acid reflux patient’s treatment plan seems a reasonable measure to put in place.
